How to Clean Out + Organize Your Closet to Own Your Personal Style

It’s time to take the stress out of getting dressed. If you feel like you constantly don’t have anything to wear or are uninspired by your wardrobe, here are my quick tips on how to build out a closet that you LOVE.

Here’s three reasons why:

  1. Getting dressed is less stressful when you have fewer decisions to make.
  2. You’ll only have options that reflect your personal style that you know you feel GREAT in.
  3. You won’t waste time and money on poor quality trendy items that do not last.

Not sure where to start this process? I suggest picking up your phone.

Scroll through photos or posts where you took selfies in the mirror. Chances are if you snapped it you loved the look – and I suspect you’ll find some common trends when you analyze a group of photos together. A similar color palette, silhouette, your clearly favorite pair of jeans. Data is powerful and it’s sitting at your finger tips, use it!

As an example, here are three photos I took in 2022 that reveal my overarching personal style trends. I’m typically in black, very rarely wear pattern, prefer a 3/4 to long sleeve, and my bag is always vintage. If I’m in color or wearing pattern, it’s usually a dress for a special occasion.

Here are my suggestions on key pieces to have in your wardrobe.

This is NOT a blog post where I advise you on how to dress like me. I want you to dress like you. These pieces are a great place to start but remember they could be any style, color, or print that represents YOU best.

  1. Basic Tees – great on their own or layered
  2. A few great pairs of jeans – who cares what the trends are in denim, buy what looks best for your body type.
  3. Blazers – Versatile for work or personal life, so many options in aesthetics to either go bold or stay classic.
  4. The Workday Vibe – your personal style in a professional setting
  5. The Professional Evening Look – a dial up from the workday. You’re comfortable with management seeing you in it but could totally go on a date after.
  6. The Dress to Impress Look – this look turns heads and you’re ready for a Step-and-Repeat. For Vegas, the big date, girls night out, NYE. It’s fire.

Once you’ve got your favorite pieces in place, I recommend labeling the looks.

Why? Next time you go to your closet and say “I need cocktail attire. Or date night. Or WFH but camera ready” you’ll have already decided what those looks are. You don’t need to think, you just get dressed. You already decided you loved these looks and labeled them accordingly. Welcome to less stress and getting time back in your day.

I love these wood hangers from IKEA and bought these Avery labels from Walmart. They are easy to remove if I need to make a switch. This is a super chic upgrade to your wardrobe on a small budget.
